Unusual gold leaf mask (*)
gold sheet: 16.19 kt, 40 g, rest.
This mask is hammered and em-
bossed from a single thin sheet of
gold. The beautifully rendered face
features almond-shaped eyes be-
neath elegantly arched eyebrows. The
forehead is adorned with a decorati-
ve diadem bearing floral motifs and
punched ornamentation.
In Java, evidence of funerary masks
have been discovered for many cen-
turies, ranging from the 1st Century
BC until 12th - 14th AD. Our mask may
represent a more recent version of
this ancient tradition.
